Skipping Meals

When a person doesn’t eat, their metabolism slows down and goes into “starvation” mode. It holds onto any calorie it gets and stops burning fat too. That’s why eating Breakfast is SO important..it starts the “fire burnin”. When your body goes into starvation mode, once a person starts eating again, the weight will pile on cause the body wants to hold onto whatever it can. Bringing fruit to work is a great idea. Even if it's a healthy AM "to-go" snack when you're “on the go” all the time. The bottom line for most people (there are rare exceptions) is that most of us need to eat 5 to 6 times throughout the day. The meals need to be small and loaded with fruits, veggies, whole grains, lean protein and healthy fats. If you continue to skip meals, your body and mind won't have enough fuel to get-the-most out of the workouts. The wrong kind of fuel and no fuel at all makes it harder to build muscle, and may also cause connective tissue, joints and ligaments to become weak and brittle. The idea behind eating healthy food often throughout the day is to assist in burning excess fat properly, build muscle (which helps in the fat burning process) and protect skin, bones, connective tissue, ligaments and joints. Don't play Russian Roulette with your health, body and mind by skipping meals. You'll pay a price sooner or later. Your body does NOT run on exercise, it runs on healthy FOOD and proper supplementation.

Hi Tony,

I understand the importance of eating frequent small meals, but when it comes to breakfast I'm not sure what to do because I do my workout first thing in the morning right out of bed.

I've read that doing your workout on an empty stomach helps the body go into fat-burning mode. I follow my workout with a balanced carb/protein shake and then eat my first solid meal within a few hours.

Do you suggest eating before working out??

The P90x program is great and really has transformed my body and workout regimen. Thank you for your constant inspiration.

Ciao Tony!

Mmmm, food and proper supplementation--can't have one without the other. Kinda like love and marriage, right?!?! Some people would probably disagree with that;) Anyway, I once spoke with a dietician a while back who described human metabolism in the following manner: The body is a furnace, and food is the fuel in the form of wood or coal. If you want the fires in the furnace to burn clean and hot, you feed it small amounts of wood at frequent intervals; however, if you prefer the fires to burn sluggishly, inefficiently and at reduced temperatures, you add a huge pile of wood at one time. Get the comparison? By eating clean, frequent meals before 7 pm, we will ultimately stoke those fires in our furnaces to burn more efficiently and much hotter--that leads to what? Weight loss! The Holy Grail of Fitness! As you recently told us all, Tony--it's not that complicated!

Oh, dude, great job on QVC the other night! Man, I could feel the intensity all the way up here!

Johnny--Thanks for the invitation Upstate, man. Let's keep in touch this summer. Maybe we can plan it. Take care!

Thank you, thank you thank you! I cannot wait to post my next blog and refer people to you. Try as I do, I can't seem to make them understand this very important point.

This is really a challenge for me. My mornings are planned down to the minute and there is a small window for me to grab a bite to eat before I head out the door.

I have to actually put my meals on my calendar at work in order for me to not let the time fly by without me eating.

Good Word Tony!

I believe everything published made a great deal of sense.
But, what about this? suppose you were to write a awesome
title? I am not saying your content is not good.
, but what if you added a headline that makes people want more?
I mean "Skipping Meals" is a little plain. You ought to peek at Yahoo's front page and watch how they create news headlines to grab viewers to open the links. You might try adding a video or a pic or two to get readers interested about what you've got to say.
Just my opinion, it could bring your blog a little livelier.
