Drive-thru Food Porn

How many times have you driven by a fast food restaurant and thought to yourself, “I’m really hungry, I don’t have the time right now so I’ll just stop this once.” Or stopped at a convenience store and thought the same? Fast food porn is just that, fast and nasty. It offers little to no nutritional value; it is designed and manufactured, yes manufactured, to make us want more. It’s loaded with sugar, salt, fat and calories, all the things our bodies crave but that make us overweight, tired and depressed.

So…if you sometimes succumb to the temptation, even every once in a while, now is the time to commit not to. It’s easy if you think about it. Would you pull up in the driveway of a known drug dealer, wait for them to come out and take your order, then wait for your drugs? Probably not, so why even pull in the driveway? I know it sounds a little dramatic, but if your one of the millions of Americans daily who consumes this stuff, you have to look at it like it was a drug, because it is. The more you eat, the more times you give in to the temptation, the more you will want.

Just think about how hard we all work to keep fit and live a healthy lifestyle. Now think how one trip through the drive-thru can ruin all that work. The best defense against it is to follow a sensible, well thought out diet plan. Keep your blood sugar even through - out the day with planned meals; keep a bar for snacks if you are out and about so you have something healthy to fill the hunger void.  Follow these small steps, and the temptation to eat unhealthy food will diminish with time and you will see fast food for what it is, Poison

Tony,

I am a p90x freshman (about 2 weeks through). I really admire your fitness techniques and now your writing. Keep it up. I agree with you on the fast food dilemma and i completely believe that fast food = drugs. But being a college student i cant help it sometimes... sometimes it is an option between starving myself and eating poison (fast food). I try to cook most of the times but every now and then things end up in the drive thru.

Tony,

Porn and temptation--it can be deadly, not only for the body but also the mind and spirit within. You know, sometimes I'll walk home from a job up 8th Avenue in Manhattan, past all the peep shows and porn outlets, tourists, wannabe rappers, hipsters and hustlers, sleazy businessmen in dark trench coats and the like. A few blocks farther and you have the mega McDonald's, Burger King and fast-food delis. One commonality I always notice observing many of the people up and down the avenue is their impulsive, desperate and exasperating behaviors. I mean, passions and emotions running wild and unchecked! No accountability. Whether it's someone stuffing quarters into a peeping booth or stuffing Whoppers into one's mouth, it's all the same--meaningless, unproductive self-gratification that leads to untimely ills and slow, agonizing death.

Why can't we see through the porn illusion and grasp reality where it counts? I think it's because of our ravenous need for convenience and quick fixes. As you say, Tony, it really doesn't take a lot of planning to keep it movin' all day long. Dried fruit, nuts, health bars, raw veggies, whole grain crackers, the list goes on and on! Just hold out and taste buds will naturally adapt. And that's the truth!

Thanks for the great commentary, brutha!

Tony,

I really had to think about this one. Does porn and fast food have a correlation to poison? Clearly, there are too many people living on fast food, it definitely is designed to become addictive. Does this mean that it's a vice. What about alcohol? Is this also something that should be avoided at all cost? It seems almost a moral judgement that you are bordering on. Clearly, anything in excess is bad for you. I've eaten fast food in the past, I've watched porn, I've drank alcohol.....in excess. But it wasn't those things themselves that made me fat and out of shape, rather, it was my inability to control myself (less porn but more the fast food and alcohol). When I was in shape, I ate fast food rarely but sometimes I did. I drank beer more often but was working out so much, it didn't have an effect (well, it did but it didn't stop me from being in keeping in shape). But it was my own inability to maintain my healthy habits and lose my own self-control that had those things overtake me. Those temptations are there regardless, even if you partake but it's up to you to control those vices, even if you do it. We all have our kinks, but can we be responsible with them? I'm not advocating eating fast food, watching porn, nor drinking for that matter, just don't judge me for doing those things if I can use them responsibly. Yes, if I'm driving on a trip, I'll have a cooler full of fruit, protein bars, some sort of light juice or water. But hey, I may stop by and get a disgusting greasy burger because I still like them. I just don't eat them often. I gained 100lbs after getting married because I lost my own self-control and ate food that was bad for me all the time, I stopped working out. It's my fault, not the fact that fast food is out there. I'm losing all that weight, more than halfway to losing it but it was my choice. But over the holidays, I went out with my family, I drank my ass off, I had a great time. After that, I got back into working out again, doing the normative healthy behavior. I don't regret it, I'd do it again. Since Christmas, I lost 20lbs (I had already lost 40lbs before Christmas), I only have 15lbs to get where I need to be (thanks to P90X). It's not the vices Tony, it's the people falling prey to the vices and their responsibility to combat those vices. We all need to take responsibility for our actions, whether it be fast food, drugs, alcohol and that sometimes fun porn. I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you on this one.

Never been much of a fast food person, but I know that for many people that's all they eat. Every day I drive home from work (right around dinner time) and I always pass the same McDonalds. The drive-thru is always full. I think it's sad to see. All of those people are waiting in line to get a quick fix. Sure, maybe they saved some money and time, but in the long run, it will cost them dearly.

I'm also constantly baffled by my coworkers. Every Monday I sit down at my lunch break and plan out the week's meals and make my grocery shopping list. Everyone always tells me that I'm "so good," and that "they could never find the time to cook every night" like I do. I find that hard to believe. I commute and hour to and from work everyday, I'm planning a wedding, I get at least 7 hours of sleep, and I exercise an hour every day- yet I manage to find the time. Some of these people live ten minutes away from home, don't exercise, don't get enough sleep - yet they can't find the time?! It sounds like a poor excuse to me.

I think there are serious issues here in America. It's all about convenience, saving time, and saving money. Everything is rushed. People want quick fixes, magical pills, not hard work and patience. Hopefully some day that will change.

Great post Tony! My motto each time I go to the grocery store is: If you don't buy it, you can't eat it. There have been times in the past where I did succumb to that temptation, and you are absolutely correct that's all it takes is one time, then your body (mostly the mind) just craves more.

Great discussion! I agree that it is all a matter of self control. I think that's what Tony was saying, and I also think that's what Chris was saying. So I think you agree more than you think Chris.

Everything in moderation. Also, when you get stuck and a fast food restaurant is your only choice, you CAN choose something healthy. I'll try to find a Wendy's because a small chili has 220 calories, 6 grams of fat (2.5 saturated), 0 trans fat, 35 mg cholesterol, 780 mg sodium (too high?), 410 mg potassium, 23 grams carbs, 17 grams protein, 5 grams fiber, 6 grams sugar, 4% Vitamin A, 4% vitamin C, 8% calcium, 15% iron.

Tony,

You know, I never made that connection with fast food and actual porn. To think, to pass through a fast food joint, convenience store or a "bodega" (which is the Spanish word for "Store" and usually found in NYC) on the way home form work, is a very fast and one way slide to all that hard work done to rid ourselves of unhealthy, unsightly FAT!!!! And, like trying to get away from ACTUAL porn, that one time you DO decide to step into the peep booths, rent the DVD, find the sdult show or double click the adult Internet banner, the second thats done, it can't be undone. Guilt sets in. All that hard work of saying NO and STICKING to it gone, b/c the quarters got pushed into the booth--or the quarters got pushed across the counter for a bag of Doritos or a Biggie fries upgrade. Totally not worth suffering that guilt...or working with P90X another 45 minutes for 5 minutes of salt, fat, grease or sugar.

Thanks for that perspective, Tony. It's little wonder why P90X, X+--and you--totally ROCK, dude!!! :-)

Talk about being convenienced to death---fast food will do it! It goes beyond just taking into account moderation though, as Christopher mentioned. We tend to get so far removed from the core purpose of why we eat...or have sex, that we convince ourselves that the nutritional void of a burger we just wolfed down or the buck-two-eighty (joke) we paid to get aroused actually gave us physiological nutrients to keep us alive, or physical and psychological intimacy with another person.

The point is if we are truly lucky enough to have a choice- in either matter- why settle for less than the honor your body/mind deserve? Convenience? As previously mentioned, one can be convenienced to death.

I'm usually on the road, carwise, about 1,500 miles a week. I do agree with Judy that many fast-food joints now have options in a pinch (salad- no dressing or breads, non-fat yogurts, power shakes, etc)- but packing my own little munchies works best.

Funny note though- I had no idea NYC had so many peep-shows! Naive, I know, but funny. I'm thinking honor your body & your heart--go for the good, real & healthy stuff...in food & love!

Sup Tony. I stopped eating fast food and drinking almost 3 years ago. I've never felt better and lost some lbs too. Have a good one.

I have to agree with Tony and disagree with Chris. You are splitting hairs by saying that it's not the vices but the person inability to resist the vice. I also don't think that you can compare Alcohol to fast food... Some form of alcohol have good merits, so used in moderation not a bad thing, but fast food..., never a good thing (Unless starving on a desert island for weeks and no other food available, go for it then).
Guilty of eatting it myself, less and less as I P90 myself smaller and continue to grow my good food catalog and diminsh the bad things.

So step away from the fast food, no run, it's to fat to catch you anyway!

I've sadly been reading about how animals are harvested for consumption. How about becoming a vegetarian, anyone? It is making me physically ill and I've cried a few times watching the video of the industry I thought I supported. Tony, what can I do? You are awesome, by the way. I look forward to your p90x workouts like I do from no other trainer. You are awesome and are one of my heros!! Help me on the animal cruelty please though. I am feeling messed up on that front.

Love Ya,

Kathy

When I was a child, Saturday night was mom's "night off" so my dad and I would go up to McDonald's to pick up dinner. Fast food at that time was the occasional treat. And I will forever have fond memories of my important task - holding the drinks so they didn't spill on the way home. :)

Unfortunately, now it has become breakfast lunch and dinner on a regular basis for so many people and worse - for their children. Remember in grade school when there was usually one child who was overweight in your class? Now, that's the majority.

I am fortunate in the fact that I just love to cook. I find it therapeutic. It's actually a lot of fun to try new recipes and it can even be a social thing. Invite a friend/boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse/son/daughter into your kitchen and let them help you, chat about your day, get away from the tv set and the video games! Spend some time together.

It's challenging to take a decadent favorite (tacos, hamburgers, pizza) and make a healthier yet tasty version. But once you do - you don't want the fast food stuff anymore.

I may be struggling to lose my weight as I'm stuck in that "ten pounds to lose" category that seems SO difficult. But I certainly feel better knowing where all my food comes from. I'm not even remotely tempted by fast food anymore. I know I can make it healthier, tastier, and cheaper at home. Sometimes, it takes less time to cook up something in your kitchen than it does to swing by the drive thru. The trick is to be prepared.

Thanks Tony for inspiring me to live a healthier lifestyle.

Tony,

My best friend Joe McCall informed me of P90x. He started 9 months ago. When he started he could barely do one push up. He is finishing up his third time through the program now and the other day did over 100 unassisted pull ups. His transformation is unbelievable. His 40th birthday is coming up in March. I didn’t know if you would like to surprise him and come join us for his party. I will pay for your air fare and hotel expenses to sunny Redington Beach Florida. I know you are busy so if not could you give him a shout out and tell him congrats on the 40th but more so his great accomplishment. His screen name is joe39. As for me I am half way through the first 90 days and its kicking my butt and I am loving it. I am a former Toronto Blue Jay baseball player and looking to get back into playing shape.

Thanks for everything you do. You are awesome.

Hey,

Great post. I do feel that while some will eat fast food just once and crave more I think it depends on the person. I often eat healthy 6 days of the week and allowed a "cheat" meal or day once a week if needed. At first it was nice and a change of pace but just yesterday I had a cheat day and at the end of the day I actually felt worse and did not enjoy that style of eating anymore. So this article, coupled with my realization of last night, has made me decide to no longer eat that way and to just eat clean 7 days of the week. Great read! Thanks
