Food Wars

Recently I posted a news story about a professional tennis player who started winning shortly after he switched to a gluten free diet. The article was asking if the wins were connected to the diet. What a shock that all ends of the dietary spectrum came out in force to defend their way to eat. The lesson here in my opinion is that no single food philosophy can possibly apply to everyone. How can anyone think that the 22 year old Kenyan marathon runner and the 38 year mother of 4 should have the same diet? It's ridiculous. I've been to Japan, Italy and France - all three nations eat massive amounts of "good" carbohydrates at every meal yet it's very hard to find fat Italian, French and Japanese people - unless they live here.

I'm a gluten "lite" - tons of veggies, free range chicken and wild salmon eatin' dude these days. I'm discovering the less gluten the better for my body chemistry. I was vegan for years and recently I added free range chicken and wild salmon. Universal black and white mandates for all is short-sighted. I lost some weight eating just veggies, fruit and beans so I've upped the protein and calories. Making adjusts based on ever changing needs (especially as I get older) is perfectly normal. The diet guide in P90X and the one in my book are different. So what? Both ask you to eat HEALTHY FOOD! Some people can be vegan for a lifetime while others fluctuate from one healthy diet to another. The key word here is healthy. My weight will go up and down 10 pounds but as long as the food I'm eating is healthy and whole I'll probably be okay.

  1. Great insights. I see so many people go to extremes and get militant when it comes to nutrition. There are so many different eating philosophies and I try to take the good out of each one of them, but I don't identify myself with any specific group.

I think that healthy eating requires common sense (balance, variety and moderation)

  2. Life wouldn't be very fun if you had to be so uptight about every aspect of your diet all the time, would it?

I just started P90x, and I am eating a thousand times better than I was a month ago -- but I don't go over board. When I pick something up, I look/ask for the ingredients. If there are things I can only find in a science lab, back it goes.

  3. Another great post Tony. Sorry to hear about your injury. Get well soon bro!

  4. Tony,
You are so right and plus some people just get bored or lazy and switch up what they eat.

I also agree its not a problem as long as you stick with things grown on earth, healthy and natural.

(sneaking in a Shakeology now and then is just fine too)

    GREAT post!

  5. I have a troubled relationship with food. I used to blindly follow other people's advice on what is "good for you" and eat it. I have recently completed my P90X Lean and now is on Insanity. The diet did not work for me, the small but frequent eating made me think of food all the time. Having said that, P90X results are undeniable, and it has helped me to accept that not all "diets or diet advice" is right for me and I have to be responsible to figure out what food works for my body, to fuel it right so it would function how it is suppose to. Tony, thank you for creating P90X, you have showed me things that I didn’t know I was capable of doing.

  9. Hi Tony;

I don't know if you read these comments but I am writing an article for Men's Journal magazine about gluten-free dieting. I'd love to get a comment or two from you if possible for this article.

I agree Tony the way I look at it is that we need to get back to basics and stop eating out. My wife and I started P90x in April and cut out soda and started cooking our food. Presently I have lost 25lbs and feel great. I have tryed to go back to some of our favorite resturants and when we do I feel slugish. Cooking and preparing your own fresh food is key.

  11. I don't consider such kind of diets very healthy. Out organism needs to get a lot of stuff. And a gluten free diet belongs to the diet that can even make some harm to health.

    Hi Tony,
I have done a round of P90x, I read your book and now I am on week 3 of the cleanse. I have my eyes open wide to how my body reacts to the foods I eat and when. Thanks for the book and P90x. I am now getting back on another round of p90x, I'm doing the lean version this time. I hope you recover quickly.

Sad to hear that your 1-on-1 series is being discontinued.

You and Mason are clearly class acts, and I'll miss the monthly gift of good workouts and great comradrie.

Just received my "final" one on one as they are being discontinued. I have them all and will miss the monthly disk. It kinda felt like I got to know both Tony and Mason. Good job guys! I might age as I continue with the "one on one's, but time stands still for the two of you....

  15. I have worked P90X into my workouts since the first of the year and it's the real deal. I had found Tony a little corny on the DVD's as an instructor, but that's the case with most workout instructors. However, this blog is awesome. I read the first three entries and agreed strongly with just about every point made. I will definitely continue to follow.

I have been a vegetarian for several years. It is easy living vegetarian, but I always wonder if I am giving my body what it needs nutritionally.

I received P90X several years ago. I lost about 20 while on the program. I was expecting more weight loss. I was wondering if my diet was a factor in not losing more weight.

    Tony:

Being a recently diagnosed Celiac patient, I turned totally gluten free in January. Its probably the hardest thing I ever had to do, being Italian, I love my bread and pasta.

Funny thing, I was so sick when eating glute; heart burn, extreme fatigue, weight gain, stomach issues. Two weeks off and I was a changed person. Six months off and I started Power 90 and I am working through it. I now run 9 miles a week (I couldn't run 50 feet when I started).

It is amazing what the right diet for the right person can achieve. Oh, I forgot . . . "Gluten Free" Shakeology every day. I am addicted.

  20. Man! I wish I had read this post when it first came out! I recently found out by experimenting with my diet that I am not only sensitive to gluten but also dairy. I have suffered for years with sore and swollen joints, headaches, sore muscles for extended periods of time, brain fog and a host of other symptoms. Glutin and dairy has decreased my motivation level and ability to think straight. I am 56 years old I have been fit all my life and continue to work at staying fit. Since I have eliminated glutin and most dairy from my diet I feel great! My motivation level has increased, the swelling in my joints has disappeared, I sleep better, and recover quicker after a workout.
