Alcohol & Caffeine

Let me start out by saying that I have many detractors regarding this topic.
Coffee and wine drinkers hate this argument and fight tooth and nail to protect
their addictions. Here's how I feel about both.

First off, caffeine and alcohol are both considered (by many experts) slow
poisons that over time can cause many health issues down the line. Both
form an acidic environment in the body which can lead to heart disease,
inflammation, arthritis, diabetes and major digestive issues. Some early
studies are showing a possible link to various cancers as well.

Both wreak havoc on your blood sugar and how it's
regulated. Caffeine taxes the adrenal glands which is responsible for
regulating your hormones. It puts the body into a fight or flight
mode (all the time) which can cause longterm ill-health effects and
difficulty with weight loss. It also stimulates our central nervous system which can
affect perception, moods and behavior. Although it does increase the
"feel-good" neurotransmitter dopamine when we drink it, over time
you need more and more caffeine for the desired effect.

Dropping these two "toxins" will help you find your natural energy without a
dependence on anything outside of food to get energy or relax. Removing both
will help you to have deeper and more restful sleep.

When we drink alcohol we rarely go into REM sleep, which means our
bodies don't get the healing recovery rest that we need. Over time, it also
depletes serotonin in our bodies, which can then cause depression, mood
swings and other issues related to low serotonin. Drinking also affects our
neurotransmitters in our brain, thinking patterns, memory and hormone
regulation. Not to mention what it does to the liver...I think you probably
know that already!

Wow! Thanks for the information! I have never heard of this drink, until now. Better warn some girlfriends about it, to make sure their paying attention to what their young adult children may be drinking. I can see many of them saying its just an energy drink, because there are so many on the market now days...and we wouldn't have a clue that it contained alcohol.

I can attest to that. Over the past month I have fallen back into old habits (caffeine) due to my wedding and honeymoon. I’ve felt tired and sluggish. I had more energy when I was eating right and not taking caffeine. I’ll thankfully be getting back to that next Monday. I have taken caffeine in the past daily, before workouts, but would crash later in the day. I believe I get the same workout and better energy by just eating healthy.

Yes, I have been aware of these disadvantages to coffee and alchohol (my Chinese acupuncturist warned me years ago that "coffee is poison!"). However, aren't there also studies that have determined benefits for caffeine and red wine in moderation (e.g. resveratrol)? Hard to strike a balance between these viewpoints. While I certainly feel the effects on my morning workout if I drink a glass of wine the night before, do you really believe that in concert with a healthy, balanced diet (top of Michi's ladder, e.g.), that 1 coffee/day and 1-3 glasses of wine/week are that toxic in the overall scheme of things?

I don't even care if it has caffeine in it, I like the taste.

I've been weening myself off Caffeine for weeks. Almost done. Now as for booze, well, I like it too much. We all make choices. :)

Here's how I weened myself off caffeine. Crystal Light makes several flavors in various caffeine mixes. I bought a two week supply of each. Starting with either "energy" or "focus" depending on level of caffeine currently taking. At the end of two weeks drop down to the next level of flavor. Two more weeks drop again. After 6 or 8 weeks you can switch to plain water and avoid the nasty headaches with trying to go cold turkey. I've been caffeine free for 7 months now and I can't believe the difference in energy. Especially in the afternoons, no crash!!

Such an interesting debate...In my experience for every study that says something is good there is also a study to say it is bad. I side more with Tony about the caffeine....long term consequences certainly outweigh any short term benefit. However there are several studies suggesting 1 glass of red wine can benefit the cardiovascular system. It should be noted that pretty much every study that makes such a claim ALSO states that cardiovascular health is benefited by daily exercise, proper nutrition, less stress, no smoking...and the list goes on and on. The important point here is that when added to a healthy well balanced diet, excercise regimen,and lifestyle, 1 glass is not going to hurt you. Chronic usage and/or dependency (more then 1-2 glasses per week or dare I say month)is of no use and actually, as Tony points out, harmful. Quite frankly, when I'm doing what I'm supposed to, I don't want alcohol or caffeine.

Tony, I just wanted to let you know, you are my inspiration... I wish I could write you a letter, or even an e-mail. You are so energetic and in such great shape for 50, and I am very proud of you. You inspire many of us, and keep a lot of us going and pushing. I love you for p90x. I just finished my first month, following the nutrition and the workout schedule, and I am loving the results. I am 23 years old, and its a night and day difference from where i was, literally... All I do is talk healthy ways of life and eating now, and share your work, p90x, and philosophies with others. I live p90x.
You have helped my health, my bad habbits, and even my relationship, with the changes p90x has caused.
I just really wanted to let you know you are a blessing and inspiration, and I thank you.

If you're happy without wine, chocolate and coffee, good for you.

If, on the other hand, you enjoy these things, then plain old moderation is probably the best route, since feeling guilty and getting stressed about your indulgences will probably cause more damage to your health than anything - unless your indulgence is smoking, of course ;-)

I am not a coffee drinker but have however been a long time Mountain Dew drinker up until I started the P90X program. I thought that it would be really difficult to quit but surprisingly since eating healthier I have not had the effects that usually occur when I go without Mountain Dew for a few days.

2016 oz coffee in a year assuming you drink one 6oz cup a day.576 oz wine a year assuming you drink three 4oz glasses a week.
Humm times that by ten years and you get..
25920 oz of liquid caffine and alcohol. vs water instead. Damages much?

I agree that caffeine and alcohol are considered poisons for the body. So is nicotine, sugar, processed food. Eliminating ALL of that from your nutrition is a challenge, and believe me, I went through it.

People will argue, "what about if I NEED a fix" or another comment would be "what if I NEED to..." Ok. Here's how I handle that. Every time I have a stressful moment where I think 'I could use a cigarette or a glass of wine to destress from that situation' ask yourself this question - will that HELP or DETER me from reaching my goal? If you think about it, how often do you go for that cigarette to destress you from the day? It becomes a habit, and it also become so instinctual, we need it to survive.

That's why I decided to take all of that out. Yes, it was difficult at first, but you know what, today I am NOT TEMPTED by any of it!

What was my resolution? Exercise. Any hard workout will destress you from the day, burn calories, increase your heart rate, and best of all, you WILL feel better because you did it yourself - and you didn't need anything artificial to help you accomplish it! As you continue to exercise, you improve, you get better.

What happens if you drink too much alcohol or smoke too many cigarettes? Over time it will damage your liver and damage your lungs. On the other hand, what happens when you exercise a lot? YOU GET HEALTHIER! No cigarette, piece of fried food, glass of booze, will EVER compare to improved health, endurance, flexibility, and strength.

Actually people should look at the Blood Type Diet, not everyone is created equal and used in moderation it isn't harmful.

A blood type "A" actually needs some coffee in their day to day life. Blood type "A" don't produce enough acids in their stomach and coffee does that for them. Also, blood type "A" should be on a more vegetarian diet than any other diet, and get most of their proteins from vegetables and soy.

While Blood type "O" actually benefits from having meat and milks in their diet, and shouldn't have coffee.

Am I fighting it tooth and nail? No I'm just educated.

i would appreciate ONE scientific study showing that coffee is at all bad for you in moderation. Coffee is about as natural a drink you can have outside of water. its a bean from a plant, roasted. end of story. you do need to drink organic to avoid pesticides, and it is true that Caffeine is an alkaloid, but in small amounts its totally harmless. Please people learn moderation, and learn not to blindly follow a person whos not backing there statements with any real facts.

Please clarify when you post things like this that your talking about EXCESS. yes if your an alcoholic its going to affect you negatively. Yes if you drink a pot of coffee a day its not good for your health. a glass of wine with dinner or a cup of coffee in the morning WILL NOT hurt you, even slightly.

Marijuana is about as natural of a drug as you can get.
The coca leaf (where cocaine comes from) is about as natural as you can get. All you have to do is chew on it to get the same effects as coffee.
Just because something is natural does not mean that it is okay to consume.

The list of natural ingredients that are harmful to you could go on and on.

"Its natural" is a poor argument for a justification.

for 2 yrs. i suffered with pain and depression.
i saw P90x one night and bought it. i didn't know why since i couldn't even walk. i saw the videos and made up my mind to walk again. that was 2 yrs. ago. now I'm using P90x to get my body back to its old shape. so far I've lost 150 pounds. my goal is 205. thank you for the will and strength. to continue. may the lord bless you.

I agree wholeheartedly with what you are saying here Tony. As someone who used to be a drinker of both alcohol and coffee, I was a believer in these two being healthy in moderation. Since I gave up these habits, not only do I feel healthier and more energetic, but I also feel calmer and more relaxed. Life is definitely better without the addictive chemicals that are in alcohol, coffee and other junk drinks and foods.

Tony, you're assuming we're addicted when most of us merely enjoy a cup of coffee and/or glass of wine with meals. Everything in moderation!! I think you'd agree, any food in large amounts can be considered a toxin. For example, fats are a necessary nutrient, but only in controlled portions. Even too much protein without other foods (i.e. Adkins diet) is not good for the body either. Consider it ~ everything in moderation, and if nothing else, Jesus drank wine!! :-D

Coffee helps you focus more and tea widens the thought process... I will never give up Chocolate, just limit it to a piece and not a box...

Have a little wine for thy stomachs sake, enjoy the fruit of your labors, Grapes and wine have natural antioxidants, red wine in particular.... do your research Tony, it is ok in moderation... Bring it.

Why do you have withdraw when you quit?

For those who think Alcohol is fine in moderation.

Why is your body impaired even after one drink?

There is a reason for this. And if you say; "I'm not even buzzed after one drink." Then your not drinking in moderation. You have already trained your body to deal with the affects of alcohol.

People who drink every day also have withdraw symptoms when trying to quit.

Why would that be?

Always good to be reminded of how much coffee and wine I consume. I think it may be time to kick both habits. I've stocked up on tea and will be weening myself off the caffeine this month. Looking forward to getting better sleep.

Given that green tea has some caffeine in it and kombucha has trace amounts of alcohol in it as part of the fermenting process, I respectfully disagree with the stance that absolutely no caffeine or alcohol should be consumed, ever. I'll enjoy my kombucha with its minor amount of alcohol in it, and my green tea with its minute amounts of caffeine, and wonder why advice is only given in absolute terms..

Way to come out strong on these facts! Like anything else that people are emotionally attached-to it can be difficult to swallow the facts (far more difficult to swallow than caffeine and alcohol) and quit defending bad habbits.

When I started the p90X 2 weeks ago I dropped the caffeine and radically changed my diet and after the week long head ace finally went away I feel amazing! Better than I did in high school. So fall all the caffeine addicts like I once was it will not kill you to drop it!! I was drinking 2 big 30oz cups a day of soda and I stopped cold turkey. It's not that hard and everything Tony is saying is right. Most people don't know that if you were to ingest pure caffeine it would kill you. So no shape, form, or fashion is healthy.

I quit smoking 16 years ago. It was difficult at first, but now I don't even crave it.
I am down to one cup of coffee a day and usually only drink half of the cup. It is more habit than anything and I am sure I can give it up.
But alcohol? I have tried quitting, but life just isn't as enjoyable. I was born and raised in New Orleans where alcohol is such a part of our culture. When I try giving up alcohol I get depressed. Drinking soda with cranberry and a lime just doesn't cut it. I wish it did.

The drinking a one glass of wine for health reasons has been LONG debunked. People simply eating a 1/2 cup of red grapes will give you the necessary antioxidants and nutrients you would get from the wine without the negative effects of alcohol.

I appreciate your approach to adress yet another nutrition topic here...

But I only appreciate it because I have been working out with your programmes ever since I learned I will be living in California this year. (With great effects, needless to say - thanks!)

There of course is quite some truth in your post... But I am studying and working in a field directly related to all beverages, their chemistry etc.

Avoiding acidosis is of course an important topic, but should not be any issue at all given a moderate consumption of the mentioned beverages.

Many studies have shown that wine (as the only alcoholic beverage) CAN have overall positive health-effects IN MODERATION.
This is mostly due to the combination of many complex phenols and antioxidants in wine - which only form during the fermentation and ageing process.
Funny enough, white wine is AS EFFECTIVE as red wine, as white wine phenols have been proven to be stronger (but much less concentrated, obviously).

Same goes for coffee and tea: the phenols are healthy components (amongst other) formed exclusively by their processing.

The recommendation of a moderate alcohol consumption has significant results in studies:

As you correctly stated, it IS a poison...
But with moderate consumption, we are developing tolerance for this poison.

This of course can ONLY be an advantage if the consumption remains moderate at all times.

Sorry for the long post, but this is a very complex, controversial topic.
Sorry to say, but the U.S. always tend to be a little bit extreme, especially about health issues - and opinions keep swinging back and forth.

I have heard so many conflicting statements about this topic that I am frigging unsure what to believe.
Some tell that a glass of red-wine has positive effects on your body others claim the opposite...what I want to say is: Are there any true longterm studies which give evidence about how those "drugs" affect ones system ?
There is sooo much guess-work and personal attitude involved....

Just remembered this silly idiom: "Life ends deadly. Sports guys die healthier."

As in all life and nature sciences, satisfying statistical probability levels are hard to achieve.

But it seems clear that a little bit of indulgence - whatever it is - might help.

Just remember Churchill: "Do something good to your body so your soul is comfortable in it."
(And by that he meant excessive drinking, smoking Havannas and little sleep for himself. He lived until aged 90. You know all the famous quotes like "Sports is war minus the shooting".)

When I was pregnant, I had weaned my body off of both wine and caffeine and have slowly increased my intake over the past two years since I had my first child. I felt great without the wine and coffee! Looks like I need to re-think my present usage. Thanks for the post.

love your p90 program, but most studies show, there's nothing really to gain between moderate alc/caffeine consumption and abstinence. you just loose the quality of life that gives you a glass of good wine or beer.

do you know this study from 2010:

7 514 participants were observed for 13 years for the occurrence of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.

Conclusion: "Our results suggest a slight risk reduction for CHD mortality (coronary heart disease) with moderate coffee consumption and strengthen the evidence on the lower risk of CHD with coffee and tea consumption."

Clearly, alcohol affects the brain. Alcohol can produce detectable impairments in memory after only a few drinks and, as the amount of alcohol increases, so does the degree of impairment. Actually, your post helps people to be aware and beware of alcohol and caffeine.

Interesting that someone used Crystal Light to get off coffee and caffeine. Here's what's in Crystal Light:

Ingredients: CITRIC ACID, MALTODEXTRIN, CALCIUM PHOSPHATE, ASPARTAME, MODIFIED CORNSTARCH, RED 40, CONTAINS LESS THAN 2% OF NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, POTASSIUM CITRATE, ACESULFAME POTASSIUM, SALT, ARTIFICIAL COLOR, BLUE 1, BHA (TO HELP PROTECT FLAVOR).

Just my 2 cents, but I think a cup of black coffee (natural product, grown on a mountainside) is better than something whipped up in a chemistry lab....

Hello,

I really enjoy the idea of people trying to become healthy but I would like to shed some light on this topic. It has been proven that people who drink 1-2 drinks twice a week have lower blood pressure then people who abstain from alcohol. Furthermore, they have lower LDL levels and higher level HDL. You could most likely google this study, it was presented at the university of Arizona in a cardiovascular physiology class I took (spring 2010).

As for caffeine, it also has some great health benefits. Since caffeine is a neuro-stimulator it has some amazing benefits for counteracting some of the side effects that old age part takes in. Neuro-stimulators increase brain activity, which increase action potential propagation down the axons of nerve cells. These axons transfer the impulses by processes known as the nodes of ranvier. the signal ends up in an area called the terminal button where acetylcholine is stored and released. for the impulse to go from electrical to a chemical signal this neuro-transmitter has to be released so a desired action can occur (such as remembering a name). In diseases such as Alzheimer's there is a lack of this neuro-transmiter synthesis. A way to naturally counteract this would be to increase neuro stimulation.

I think anything in excess is bad, however as a future medical doctor I will always drink coffee (Black only) unless I find strong medical supporting evidence to counteract the positive benefits.

I quit drinking so many soft drinks and sweet tea several months ago. It was not easy, but I did it! I feel so much better if I just drink water.
If you eat or drink alot of something it's really bad for you. I have a family history of high blood pressure and heart disease and diabetes. It's hard to let go of the foods and drinks I love so much, but it's totally worth it if it will improve your health.

What if folks just listened and tried what was suggested without making excuses... If you are too weak to commit and follow through then so be it. Pretty certain few look like Tony, but hey what does he know. Reminds me of my kids when I try to explain how to do things better/easier but I'm fat, dumb and old, what do I know...

everything in moderation..including exercise. for heavens sake a glass of wine with friends is wonderful thing. I don't smoke, so that's not a vice, but a piece of birthday cake or a glass of wine has not hindered my health or my sleep in any way. Most people think I'm about 10 years younger than I am. I exercise regularly and eat well. Deprivation is for monks. Chocolate, wine and sex are a few of life's greatest pleasures.

I wouldn't have believed Tony's argument until three weeks ago when I had a panic attack along with severe depression that hit me like a freight train one morning on my way to work. I only drink two - three cups of coffee per day and a glass of wine every night.

Long story short: I got completely off caffeine and alcohol within five days. And I haven't felt this good in years. Just sayin...

Great blog post. I have switched to decaf coffee to save my adrenals and go moderate on alcohol if I have any. There is cause and effect...whatever you put in the body is the cause and you most certainly will see an effect.

You've had quite an impact on my 11 yo son. He started P90X in April (with my husband, who's been doing your work-outs since he ruptured his Achilles in Dec, 2008), my son finished it and is continuing with the rest of your work-outs religiously on a daily basis. He was the only one in his class who did not have donuts at their end of the year school party and everybody, including the teachers, thought there was something wrong with him! He used to have the biggest sweet tooth and loved the fast food, more than any one of my 3 kids. He now only eats healthy, no soda and has told me to stay away from my Starbuck latte's and my social wine drinking because the caffeine & alcohol are poison! We can still learn a lot from our kids! Prior to doing P90X the first time, I did the "Quantum Wellness Cleanse" (Kathy Freston). It was the BEST I've ever felt in my life and really it was just about giving up those kinds of toxins.

I haven't been able to stay away from the bad stuff 100% but it definitely opened my eyes.

I was under the impression from the "experts" that having a cup of coffee or a glass or two of wine was good for you. You know, the whole moderation thing. Plus, if you are working out regularly and eating decent, then a little "cheating" in the wine and caffeine department would not be so bad.

I could see where an overweight person who was not eating properly, not working out regularly and also drinking coffee and alcohol to excess could be affected more with the issues outlined here.

Time to go get my cup of coffee :-)

Hi Tony - P90X made me lose 50 lbs in 4 months. Don't drink alcohol anymore (stopped 5 years ago used to be a weekend warrior) but did increase my smoking though to keep the pounds off and prevent me from eating but can still do jumping jacks, etc. You're a great trainer and am trying to get the girls in my office onto P90X - can't wait for MC2 next year. I don't drink alcohol. I have 1 cup of coffee a day. (I never drank coffee until I was 25, in grad school, and a Starbucks opened around the corner from my apartment.)
I also believe that life is about moderation. I have gone to extremes so many times, including bulimia and anorexia. If I make something completely off-limits, I get into trouble.
Truth be told, I usually drink about half of that cup of coffee, because I listen to my body and know when I've had enough. It works for me.

I have a question regarding the caffeine part of this. I love this article and agree with it. However, my life has taken a drastic change. I recently began my Bachelor of Education degree at UBC (Vancouver, Canada) and it is an intense 1 year program. I am waking up at 4/5am to get to school in time for 8am classes. I am at school until 7/8pm most nights. (I live in a suburb about 1h 30 min - 2h from campus.)

I was so exhausted yesterday I caved in and bought my first coffee in SIX years. It helped temporarily, however the effects don't last.

My question is: What is a good substitute for caffeine when I am exhausted from going and teaching classes, doing and marking homework?

It's only week 2 of classes and I feel I'm going to DIE! Suggestions?

I won't argue. It would be better for your health to not have them at all. But that isn't going to stop me from having an ocasional beer or two. Addictions are always a bad thing, but there's more to life than making sure that every little thing you put into your body is so healthy. I have an extremely healthy diet but it's just not that big a deal to me if I have an occasional drink which may not be the most healthy decision.

Tony, what about tea. Tea has caffeine but has good properties and sometimes it's hard to find without caffeine.

Also, in terms of the alcohol. I tend to have some one day of the week. Couple of glasses of wine or a cocktail. Is that still too much?

Turning 45 in a few months and am looking to turn the corner even more on slowing down the aging process so this information is great.

I respect Tony Horton and have nothing but great things to say about him. His energy, enthusiasm and commitment to health and well-being is inspiring. However, he is just one man and he is not, the last I checked, a scientist. Are we to believe his take on caffeine and alcohol at the expense of everything else that's been published in peer-reviewed science journals? He cites "early studies" linking these to cancer but, if push came to shove, I bet there wouldn't be a reference to cite. Take everything with a grain of salt people. I'm not saying go crazy and drink 10 cups of coffee and 6 beers a day but please, don't fall prey to these inflammatory articles.

My best friend Cathy and I are "coffeeholics" and it's hard for us to stop drinking coffee. Since I'm addicted to it, I make sure that I regularly brush my teeth, gargle with mouthwash, and floss every time I finish eating.

I don't have any oral health problems because I have regular check-ups with my dentist (Tega Cay-based). Cathy has discolored teeth because aside from coffee, she drinks too much alcohol and can't stop her smoking habit. Since she lives at Rock Hill, I advised her to visit a professional dentist (Rock Hill-based) for some check-ups and treatment for her teeth discoloration.

I really think if you have both in moderation then you will be ok and healthy. But having excess of either is not going to do anything for you. But as anything else also goes having excess of anything isn't good for you. Moderation is key for just about everything.

Hey Tony,

I love your P90X program, I'm on week 5 right now and going strong! I am studying vet medicine right now and have to disagree with you regarding caffeine. Although excessive amounts of caffeine can definitely have an effect, drinking green tea for example is seen as strongly beneficial to overall health and cancer prevention. I encourage you to read the book "Anticancer" if you haven't already and to check out Dr. William Li's talk on Ted.com for more information regarding the role of various foods including green tea and red wine on blood vessel formation in cancers/tumours. As far as alcohol is concerned, I agree with you in the sense that alcohol has been shown to promote mutations in cells and increase the risk of cancer. It does however seem to be beneficial to drink a glass of red wine every few days though since it contains resveratrol and proanthocyanidins, both of which are potent inhibitors of either angiogenesis or inflammation. I think a more significant issue, larger than either caffeine or alcohol (other than in the case of heavy drinkers), is the addiction to sugar that is so rampant in North America. Sugar has been shown to increase the body's infammatory response which is active in many cancers and other chronic diseases, and to decrease the immune response, in addition to increasing the risk of obesity and cardiovascular disease. Sugar also has a drug-like effect on the brain that requires ever increasing doses to acquire the same effect and there are even withdrawal symptoms!

The reason "wine is good for you" is because of the heart healthy enzymes found in the grape skins. You get the same heart bennifits by eating pure and natural grapes. Skip the alchohol. It's a known trouble maker, for your body and socity.

Over the past 9 months I weaned myself off caffeine after 25 years of drinking it. I think it really took 6mths before I could finally wake up and me normal without that "I need coffee to wake me up" feeling. I feel so much better now. I recommend that you try it. It will take time. I used decaf coffee to help with my morning habit/routine. I don't do that anymore either. Other people have told me previously that they felt much better and I didn't care or didn't believe them. Now I know. As for wine, so much of my life/hobbies/friends are related to the wine industry. I couldn't give it up completely. But I can choose moderation.

Tony is right. Some of you may not want to hear this but I did Atkins diet years ago so therefore I had to quit caffeine. I had no idea what it was doing to my body until I tried to stop it. I don't really see that much issue with it in moderation, where moderation is somewhere between once a week and once a month.

Thinking that consuming a cup of coffee everyday is having caffeine in "moderation" is pretty nuts. Would it be moderate to have dessert every day?

I've been stuck in this dilemma for a long time. Would you be able to comment and provide some insight here ? Here's the thing -

when i'm working out regularly, i'll try not to eat unhealthy food or drink alcohol- e.g. cakes, chocolates, white bread, wine etc. There are times when I cave in and want something nice for dessert and so I dig into a slice of tiramisu. I do get back on track with my food & workouts the next day.



Now, is it true that if i'm eating unhealthy, I might as well drink 2 glasses of wine? Somehow, I can never get myself to drink wine or beer or any alcohol because that would be outrightly bad but, a slice of tiramisu doesn't feel as bad.



What do you think ? If you're working out to be super fit, and if you end up eating unhealthy food, would you consider drinking to be a part of it as well? Is it worse off to drink wine/beer than eat unhealthy food like cakes etc ?



After all, don't you think you can sweat out your flab but, growing a liver takes a lot more time?

As a brewer, craft beer lover, and a P90X follower: I see no problem whatsoever with having a drink a day. I usually work it into my total calories without a problem, and try not to have more than one drink. I lost 35 pounds last time I did P90X, and I drank the second two months. I'm currently on my second round, and I'll have a drink every other day. These things will not kill you if you are using them appropriately. If you have multiple drinks a night, that will kill you.

Thanks Tony. I have been a Diet Pepsi addict for over 20 years as I have battled back and forth with my weight. I have quit several times but nothing more than two weeks. I recently ordered P90 as I am 45lbs overweight and need to get my life and body back. To start off I quit caffiene & diet colas completely this year and I have been caffiene free now for over a month. I am sleeping better & I am not near as jittery anymore. Thank you for this post. When I first got pregnant three years ago, I quit caffeine and stayed off for a long time (I had been up to 2-3 cups/day). I drank more water instead, and noticed I no longer had the sharp rise and fall of energy levels and hunger. Lately due to weakness I've begun again. It truly is an addiction. For me it's mental. I love to stop to grab a coffee before I start a really rough nursing shift. I've convinced myself again that it somehow helps my ability to stay positive about my shift - although already one cup is not enough. On top of it all, my particular faith advises against caffeine as it is a mind-altering drug, and it's made me very sad I can't shake it. I have never heard all of these reasons for why it is so harmful. I'm ready to feel more healthy and less tired. To be more healthy in body, spirit and mind.

Your commitment to spreading health to the masses reminds me a lot of the late Jack LaLanne, who got me motivated to start my 90 day P90X challenge. Keep it up.

I know we are all trying to achieve a healthy lifestyle here but as others have mentioned. Coffee and wine in moderation is not the death machine it's made to sound like here. Like anything else in life. Just be smart about it. It used to be believed that too much exercise for kids would stunt their growth and now we have a huge type 2 diabetes issue in America amongst our youth. If we took everything literally we'd have to lock ourselves in our attic and eat celery sticks for the rest of our lives.

I wonder about the research that points to the benefits of modest amounts of consumption of both these items. First coffee in and of itself has a tremenoud amount of antioxidants, and in moderation has been shown to help in reducing risk of colon ca. Additionally a single serving of red wine, particularly one with a limited sugar content has been shown to contain numerous amounts of antioxidants. Antioxidants? What does that mean? Practically speaking antioxidants bind free radicals ( a type of molecule that often can lead to cancer). Finally some research suggests coffee can also help in reducing the risk of type II diabetes. The key for both of these is moderation. So if you do enjoy the moderate consumption of these items I would say you don't have to worrry that much (especially if you avoid cream and sugar with coffee!) Otherwise I wouldn't start just for the benefits above as their are some negatives such as increased calcium loss and momentary Blood pressure changes that coffee can bring about. !

Tony are you a doctor? You say that caffeine and alcohol are both bad. I believe that these things are fine in moderation and my doctor agrees. Drinking one or two cups of coffee a day is not going to be a major cause for cancer. Neither is having a glass of red wine with dinner. I think that the supplements you promote in your p90x can also be harmful to your liver if overused. However I haven't heard you mention this risk before.
I believe that you promote anything Beach Body is trying to promote at the time. If Beach Body came out with a coffee product you would probably be promoting it in your next video saying how important it was to to drink after a workout to recover. So please stop picking on coffee and alcohol drinkers because you are not a doctor.

I havent drunk coffee for 2 years due to having anxiety issues and having read that it IS a poison .The reason for all the peeing after drinking it is because your body is taking all the liquids it can find to get rid of it naturally...Our bodies are always trying to fix themselves..Thanks for the article Tony.

Tony has made points that are almost medical facts this day-and-age. The only reason why there are reports against coffee or wine being bad is the simple fact that people, even "objective" scientist, want to justify their vices and habits (my opinion of course).

All stimulants are harmful. The problem is they are insidious, so we don't see the effects till twenty years later in the form of cancer or depression or some other medical manifestation.

The argument about one glass of wine a day being o.k. because it contains resveratrol seems like an argument to drink a glass of wine everyday. I take one resveretrol capsule a day. It doesn't come with a glass of wine.

All that being said, I drink coffee and I do drink alcohol occasionally (and when I do, I get drunk), but the point is, I'm not arguing for those things as being alright for my health just so I can partake of them. I do them knowing that I am in fact putting something unhealthy in my body. It's a simple as that. I don't need to justify my choices to anyone, not even myself. I just need to be clear about what it is I'm doing and be o.k. with it.

I hope to one day eliminate caffeine and alcohol completely from my life, but until then, I am knowingly putting harmful substances into my body...

Both Coffee and Alcohol, addiction potential aside, mess with hormones in a very negative way. They increase cortisol and estrogen and lower testosterone... all very bad for both sexes.

They are both carcinogenic... coffee is loaded with roast related carcinogens and toxins, not to mention pesticides. And has negative effects on inflammatory markers and homocysteine. And alcohol is a class one carcinogen.

They are also often used in a complimentary way as well... coffee to recover from the stupor and alcohol to recover from the coffee stress.

One last thing... a lot of people say they don't drink alcohol much or only drink occasionally but what they really mean is they drink to get buzzed or drunk infrequently.

This is the most dangerous and destructive form of drinking. This is binge drinking. Having 10 beers once a week is worse than having 10 beers everyday. That is because chronic drinkers develop a tolerance to the ill effects and, more importantly, a lot of the damage from drinking happens when you stop drinking. I would have to disagree Tony. I've found a moderate, minimal amount of caffeine a day has been extremely helpful for my exercise routines and overall wellness. I like energy shots; they are super convenient and if you buy them at they right places they are inexpensive (Eternal Energy shot is a great brand, for example.)

I usually take just one a day to get me going, and I have yet to feel any negative side effects. In fact, I've noticed positive effects and I can say that only because I've gone weeks without caffeine and noticed the difference.
